An Exclusive Interview with Gospel Artist, Progress Tawo

Today, we have the privilege of speaking with a rising voice in the Gospel music industry — Progress Tawo. She shares her journey, inspirations, and thoughts about the current state of Gospel music in Nigeria. Let’s dive in!
Can you please tell us your name, and which part of Nigeria you are from, including your local government area?
My name is Progress Tawo. I am proudly from the southern part of Nigeria, specifically from Boki Local Government Area in Cross River State. Growing up in Cross River, a place rich in culture and diversity, has significantly shaped my personality and my appreciation for music and the arts.
Can you also share a brief overview of your educational background?
I am not a university graduate yet. I had the opportunity to study at Christopher University in Ogun State, where I enrolled in a 100-level program. Unfortunately, I could not complete my studies due to some personal challenges. Nevertheless, I believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and I continue to educate myself through various means, especially in areas that fuel my passion, such as music and ministry.
How did you venture into Gospel music? What inspired you to choose this path?
I would say my journey into Gospel music was born out of a deep, genuine passion for music. From a young age, I found myself naturally drawn to singing and writing songs. Music has always been a part of my life — a way of expressing my emotions, my faith, and my experiences.
As I grew in my walk with God, I realized that my gift was not just for entertainment but to serve a higher purpose: to glorify God and edify His people. This understanding led me to dedicate my talent fully to the Gospel genre. It has been a beautiful experience so far, and I look forward to how God will continue to use me.
There have been talks about financial struggles among Gospel artists in Nigeria, with some suggesting that money has now become a major motivation. What are your thoughts on this?
Honestly, money can be a motivating factor for some Gospel artists, but it is not the case for everyone. There are those who genuinely serve God through their music without prioritizing financial gain. However, we cannot deny that the music industry — including Gospel music — requires funding for production, promotion, and personal sustenance.
That said, the motive behind one’s involvement in Gospel music should never be purely financial. The primary focus should be ministry, to bless lives and draw souls to Christ. I believe that when your heart is right, and your motive is pure, God will make provision for your needs.
Who do you look up to as a mentor in your Gospel music career?
For me, God is my ultimate mentor. While I admire many Gospel artists and learn from their journeys, I choose to look up to God above all. He is the one who gave me the gift of music, and He continues to guide me on this path. No earthly mentor can replace the divine mentorship and inspiration I receive from my relationship with Him.

How does your music help in propagating the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
My Gospel music is intentionally crafted to inspire, uplift, and spread the message of Christ. The lyrics focus on God’s sovereignty, His mercy, His love, and His faithfulness. Through my songs, listeners are reminded of the greatness of our God and the hope we have in Him.
I aim to write songs that do more than entertain — I want them to minister deeply to the soul, leading people into a closer relationship with God. Each song is a tool for evangelism and encouragement.
Recently, many unbelievers have ventured into Gospel music, sometimes pretending to be born-again Christians. What is your perspective on this trend? Do you think it’s mainly for financial gain or something else?
I believe that everyone has their reasons for the choices they make. Some may indeed enter the Gospel music scene for financial gain or fame, while others might have personal or strategic reasons best known to them.
However, it is important to note that true Gospel music ministry is not about performance; it’s about spiritual authenticity. Those who venture into Gospel music without a genuine relationship with God might succeed temporarily, but they may miss the true essence and eternal rewards of ministering through music.
For us as Gospel artists, it is crucial to remain focused on our divine assignment and not be distracted by trends or worldly motivations.
How many songs have you recorded so far, and can you share their titles with us?
At the moment, I have recorded one track titled “Loud Mercy”. It is a song that speaks about the overwhelming and unending mercy of God. “Loud Mercy” is very special to me because it reflects my personal experiences with God’s grace, and I pray it blesses everyone who listens to it.
What advice would you give to young people aspiring to become Gospel artists?
To all young aspiring Gospel artists, I would say: put God first in everything. Before you step into Gospel music, seek God’s face and ensure you have a genuine calling. It’s not enough to be talented; you must also have the anointing and a heart that desires to serve God, not yourself.
Also, be patient with the process. Growth in ministry and music takes time. Stay humble, continue to develop your gifts, and never compromise your values for fame or fortune. When you walk faithfully with God, He will elevate you in His own time.
